Show #15 – To My NON-Toastmaster Listeners
Show #15 has been released.
This show is specifically directed to the NON-Toastmaster listeners of my educational podcasts. I explain what Toastmastering is all about and hilite the many attributes being a Toastmaster helps to develop and hone. Everybody joins and goes thru Toastmasters working on different skill sets which they realize is important to them and need improving.
I follow with my traditional, “Tip of the Show”.
In this episode of “Of Worthy Mention” I discuss the article onPage 8 of the February 2010 TOASTMASTER mag, “Leadership Lessons from Olympic Athletes”. Seeing that the 2010 Winter Games from Whistler, British Columbia, Canada were closing off their 17 day spectacle, I found it fitting to talk about this article.
I wrap up the show emphasizing that my previous Show #14 (below) covered our TLI of Jan/2010 which had for its’ theme, the same theme of these 2010 Winter Olympics, “Do You Believe?”. I congratulate ALL athletes who competed at these 2010 Winter Games as they are ALL winners getting that far to compete against the “Best in the World”.
P.S. As an excellent audio/video supplementary be sure to check out the 85 Stories – Calgary Toastmasters Project where both audio and video comments from various Calgary Toastmasters describe their experience in Toastmasters. This is a project commemorating the 85th Anniversary of Toastmasters International, which was celebrated in October, 2009. The inaugural meeting was held on October 22, 1924.
Till next time !

Show #14 is now released at TDKtalksTM
Yes, I stayed up late and rose very early to publish my collage of voices, from this years’ January TLI (Toastmasters Leadership Institute).
In this show I take the “roaming mic” out to our Jan/2010 TLI (Toastmasters Leadership Institute) and ask attendees for their feedback on what they like and get out of the TLI. I open the show with my “Tip of the Show”. I then discuss the VIEWPOINT article from the February issue of TOASTMASTER mag. I present the feature live interviews from our local TLI. I round out my show with “Of Worthy Mention”, where I feature and discuss 1 select article from the February TOASTMASTER mag.

It was fun making it but I still can’t believe how private people become when they see a mic coming at them. Also, noticed how much more reserved and stiff people become in their speaking once they are being recorded.
Maybe I should just hold the mic out in the open all the time, so people just get used to it and don’t think twice about being recorded.

The Financial Crisis – A View from the Arts
I am currently listening to an interview done by Eleanor Wachtel of CBC radio and “Writers & Company” podcast fame . She is interviewing David Hare, an english playwright. He states some enlightening comments, atleast to me. You can also subscribe to this series of podcasts on iTunes. In iTunes, just search for “Writers and Company”
The link follows;

This interview made me realize how insightful a comment can be made by others outside of a specific industry which you want to study or learn about. Doing an interview from within that specific industry is useless and counterproductive, because it tends to be “Totally Biased” with the “can do no wrong” attitude and disposition.
For an interesting, fresh and insightful, perhaps even “profound” view, ask someone from outside the industry. The more distant, the better !

TLI – Calgary – Jan 30 – Complete
What a grand event ! Our TLI for Jan 30, 2010 in Calgary. Well done organizers ! Great training facilities courtesy of Shell Canada.
TLI stands for Toastmasters Leadership Institute” and is primarily where the 7 club executives get THEIR training to do their club officer duties to their club; twice a year. BUT, there are also several additional educational workshops offered that span the genre of general interest, by presenters that are picked based on their expertise, enthusiasm & knowledge of their topic. For me, having attended many, its also a great venue to network and update on what my fellow TM friends are up to, both within & outside of Toastmasters.
I presented a 40 minute Club Officer Training (COT) module “When YOU are VP Membership”. Got a chance to break a few “traditional powerpoint rules”. I say “traditional” because these are the “no-brainer” rules, aka “no more than 4 – 5 bullets per page. And I also know I killed a few trees and may not be on the best of terms with David Suzuki and other environmentalists. But take heart in knowing that I recognize this and will roll it into my next presentation, which I can’t wait to do. I already know where I need/want to improve to make a more exciting, enjoyable and educational presentation.
Membership is dear to me as I learn much from each and every member who joins our club(s). Each new member that joins brings another dimension into your club dynamics. This is especially true when these members are from other countries and speak a broken english but still highly communicable. You can learn all about their culture and journey as well, along with them growing along in their Toastmasters journey.
Be sure to listen to my next TDKtalksTM podcast show, “TLI – What’s it to YOU !”

Speaker Watch
My early days in Toastmasters, made me realize to stay clear of topics in the genre of Politics, Religion & Sex.
However, my past 5 days in Manitoba, being bound in by a winter weather pattern, then having to drive in it for 6 hours, allowed me to watch this remarkable speaker, Ms. Danielle Smith, newly appointed Leader of the Wild Rose Alliance Party of Alberta.
The actual interview was 1-on-1 with Peter Van Dusen of CPAC, Canada’s parliamentary channel.
But here is her channel on YouTube;

One way of becoming a better speaker is watching others and superimposing ourselves into those positions to see if we can aspire to such a style.

New YouTube Channel
I was confronted with a peculiar bug on my YouTube channel (no, I doubt it was anything to do with China ) so I had to delete my channel and begin a new one – no fret though – It’s exactly the same format as my old YouTube Channel.
It’s my video promo for TDKtalksTM at;
Check out my superfluous 1:45 sec video debut & give me feedback !

Loosing our Ability to Communicate with Each Other
Every now and then I power up my “wonder box” and tune in to Jian Ghomeshi on CBC’s QTV (http://www.cbc.ca/q ), also found on YouTube.
I have now watched this specific interview with “The Amazing Kreskin – Mentalist” (who hales from Montclair, Mass, the US of A) several times. He has been around performing his mind reading feats since the 70’s.
Listen to his message of how he has witnessed peoples’ lost art of communicating;

Get a coffee or whatever favorite beverage you like, as it goes about 30 mins.
If this isn’t another plug for Toastmasters and other forms of social development – and what it can do for you !

My YouTube Promo Video
I had some fun creating & posting a YouTube video -
YouTube has a great collection of amateur & pro Toastmaster video uploads
that are great to watch. Give mine a whirl.
And yes, my computer will be arriving so during the Christmast break, I plan to put together another podcast.
Yes, I am still around …..
Just an update as my next show, Show #13 ‘ ” xxxxxxxxxxx ” is long long overdue.
My PC was hit by a Virus ( I think ) and after a week of trying to contact and get support from my ISP, along with running reptitive scans and attempts to cleanse my PC, all I succeeded in, was consuming 1 week. I say, “I think” because I was unable to remove the virus with removal software, after several scans, BUT simply deleted the identified culprit file with windows navigator. Now when I run the virus scanning software, all shows OK. Well this was too easy and I, now a skeptic at times, thought, how can I be certain? My ultimate decision was to simply REPLACE my PC, as it’s 6 years old already, being a single core CPU – quite slow – and a hard drive that is nearly full. On order and still not delivered, this supposed “Virus” was a blessing in disguise.
During that time I spent some time peering into the world of a Virus, what they are, what they do, etc. For one thing, not many people know much about them, as a Virus is very elusive. Unlike the early days of viruses, where they were easy to spot because they completely formatted your hard drive, locked up your computer and did other very OBVIOUS actions. It became a no-brainer, that a virus has taken over.
Today, viruses are elusive, because they can simply nest themselves into your PC, morph themselves into various legit programs and sit there doing very inconspicuous actions, which one would never be able to identify. Cool ! It’s like hacking into someones’ bank account and simply withdrawing small sums of several dollars every couple of days or weeks, for months on end. Simply, one would never know.
I am told that there are businesses which sell blocks of compromised computers for the sole purpose of co-ordinating planned and timed attacks to a target website, be it government, e-biz or whatever. These compromised PC’s can sit anywhere, such as peoples’ homes, yours and mine, run and behave normally so as not to raise any suspicion from their principle owners and users.
Now, I am far from an expert on this. Suffice to say, use ONLY legit programs and use and rely heavily on a industry recognized virus scanning software.
Oh yes, Show #13 will be out soon ………………
Stay Tuned ………..
